Experimental Results

In a perception experiment, observers are presented with the progressive transmission of moving target sequences at extremely low bit rates. Upon detecting the target, the observer clicks the computer mouse button and the target motion will stop. The observer is then required to use the mouse to click on the location of the target on the screen.

Target detection is scored in the following manner. A scoring box was created that is centered on the target and twice the length and width of the target. If the target location given by the observer is within this box, the observer is scored to have a correct detection; otherwise he is scored to have a false detection. The bit rate necessary to achieve target detection is then registered for different sequences of moving targets.
